Charity Hospital In Cambodia Receives New Digital X-Ray Printer

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Feb. 16 — The Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, is now able to provide better treatment for patients with the installation of a new laser imager donated by Carestream Health. The  CARESTREAM DRYVIEW 5850 Laser Imager  addresses the need for affordable, laser-quality x-ray film printing, and is designed to serve radiology departments, imaging centers and small clinics.

The mission of the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE (SHCH) is to provide a center for the education and clinical training of medical professionals, while delivering 24-hour high-quality, free medical care for the poor and disadvantaged in Cambodia.

“We are moved by the tremendous generosity displayed by Carestream Health, in giving us a brand new laser printer to support our work,” said Kevin O’Brien, SHCH Executive Director. “One third of the people of Cambodia live on a dollar a day or less. Thanks to Carestream Health, we are the first facility in the country equipped to provide high-resolution printed images, completely free of charge.”

The hospital, managed by HOPE worldwide, is one of the busiest adult hospitals in the country and sees more than 300 patients each day. The SHCH is staffed with more than 400 people, the majority of which are Cambodian, and has provided more than one million free patient consultations since it opened in 1996. It is also the premier center for postgraduate medical education in the country and has trained more than 3,000 medical professionals.

“This generous gift represents a huge technological leap from hand developing film to solutions in the digital age. It will greatly enhance image quality, workflow and ultimately patient care,” said Dr. Spencer B. Gay, Vice Chair for Education, Department of Radiology, University of Virginia Health Sciences Center. “It is especially timely and important for these indigent patients who greatly need it, but who can least afford it.”

Laser imagers are widely used to produce radiology images from digital x-ray systems for diagnostic, referral and archival purposes. Carestream Health’s 5850 laser imager delivers superb image quality and outstanding reliability in printing both high-resolution mammography and general radiography images. The company is continuing to expand its laser imaging product portfolio and its innovative printing technology is considered a standard in the radiology profession.
